How to Care for Your Handcrafted Alpaca Clothing

Gentle on your garments, kind to the planet

Alpaca clothing is beautifully soft, incredibly warm, and remarkably durable — but to keep it looking and feeling its best, a little extra care goes a long way. At Alpacca Artistry, our garments are handcrafted using premium alpaca fleece sourced from local New Zealand farms. Each piece is made slowly and sustainably, and we encourage the same thoughtful approach when it comes to washing and storing your alpaca items.

Here are our expert tips to keep your beanies, scarves, gloves, and vests in perfect condition for years to come:

1. Avoid Frequent Washing

Alpaca fiber is naturally odor-resistant, moisture-wicking, and hypoallergenic — which means you don’t need to wash it often. Airing out your garments after wear is often enough to keep them fresh.

Sustainability tip: Fewer washes help reduce water and energy use — and they’re gentler on your clothing.

2. Hand Wash in Cool Water

If your item needs a wash, use cool water and a mild, eco-friendly detergent (wool or baby shampoo works well). Gently swirl the item in the water without wringing or scrubbing.

Soak for no more than 5 minutes

Rinse in clean cool water

Avoid bleach, stain removers, or strong soaps

3. Gently Remove Excess Water

After rinsing, gently press your garment between two clean towels to remove water. Never wring or twist alpaca fibers — this can stretch or distort their shape.

4. Lay Flat to Dry

Dry your item on a clean, dry towel laid flat in its natural shape. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources (like radiators), which can damage the fibers.

Sustainability tip: Air drying not only preserves your garment — it’s also a zero-energy solution that’s good for the environment.

Long-Lasting Luxury, Naturally

Taking care of your alpaca clothing isn’t just about preserving its beauty — it’s also about supporting a slower, more sustainable way of living. At Alpacca Artistry, we’re proud to create one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect this philosophy from fleece to finish.
