From Fleece to Finish: The Heartfelt Journey of Handmade Alpaca Crochet

Three years ago, I picked up my crochet hook and began a journey I never expected would become such a passion. It all started with the soft, luxurious fleece of local alpacas — warm, natural, and full of character. Today, every beanie, scarf, and shrug I make carries that story: of humble beginnings, slow crafting, and the beauty of handmade work.

I source my alpaca fleece from nearby farmers, supporting small-scale growers who care deeply for their animals. Each fleece arrives raw and full of potential — soft in the hand, rich in texture, and ready to be transformed.

The process starts with pulling the fibres apart and carding with a drum carder, gently brushing the fleece into soft, cloud-like batts. This step can’t be rushed; it’s about patience and care. Once carded, I spin the fiber by hand on a spinning wheel — drawing the fleece into yarn that’s full of life and individuality.

With each strand spun, the next chapter begins: crocheting. My hands know the rhythm by now — loops and twists that slowly become warm beanies, cozy fingerless gloves, delicate ear warmers, and one-of-a-kind vests and shrugs. No two pieces are ever quite the same, and that’s exactly the magic.

Everything I make is rooted in a love for natural fibers, slow fashion, and thoughtful creation. I believe in honoring the materials, the animals, and the farmers behind them. Each finished item tells a quiet story — of warmth, of hands at work, and of something made to last.
